EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps your brain reprocess painful memories so they no longer control how you feel or live.

It's effective for anyone struggling with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, phobias, grief, low self-esteem, or the kind of stress that just won't shift.

People who complete EMDR therapy commonly experience lasting relief from distressing memories, reduced anxiety, better sleep, improved confidence, and a sense of freedom.

EMDR therapy is a recommended treatment by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), the World Health Organisation (WHO), and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS).

Conditions EMDR Therapy Treats

EMDR was originally developed for PTSD, but is now widely used for:

Trauma

EMDR helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories that have become "stuck", reducing their emotional charge so they no longer feel as raw or overwhelming. Rather than avoiding the memory, clients work through it in a structured, safe environment until it loses its grip, leaving the memory intact but no longer distressing.

Anxiety and panic disorders

Anxiety and panic often have roots in past experiences that taught the brain the world isn't safe. EMDR identifies and reprocesses those underlying memories, helping to break the cycle of fear and hypervigilance. Over time, the nervous system learns to respond more calmly, reducing both the frequency and intensity of anxious episodes

Childhood trauma and abuse

Experiences of childhood trauma and abuse can leave deep imprints that shape how a person feels about themselves and others well into adulthood. EMDR provides a safe, carefully paced way to revisit and reprocess those early experiences, reducing their ongoing impact. It's particularly well suited to memories that feel too difficult to put into words.

Depression

Depression is frequently linked to negative experiences and beliefs formed over time. EMDR works to uncover and reprocess the memories and events that feed those beliefs, shifting the way a person sees themselves and the world. As those painful associations lose their hold, mood often lifts and a more balanced perspective becomes easier to maintain.

Grief and loss

Grief can become complicated when memories of a loved one are wrapped in pain, guilt, or unresolved emotion. EMDR helps to gently process those difficult memories, easing the emotional intensity without erasing the connection to the person lost. Many people find they're able to hold their memories with more warmth and less anguish following treatment.

Phobias

Phobias are typically tied to a specific memory or series of experiences that the brain has learnt to treat as a threat. EMDR targets those root memories directly, allowing the brain to update its response. The feared object or situation remains the same, but the intense, automatic fear reaction fades as the underlying memory is processed.

Low self-esteem and negative core beliefs

Negative beliefs like "I'm not good enough" or "I'm unlovable" rarely appear from nowhere. They're usually rooted in specific experiences. EMDR traces those beliefs back to their origins and reprocesses the memories that reinforced them, allowing healthier, more accurate beliefs to take hold. The shift can feel quiet but profound, touching every area of daily life.

Performance anxiety

Performance anxiety is often fuelled by past experiences of failure, criticism, or humiliation that the brain continues to treat as live threats. EMDR targets those specific memories, taking the sting out of them so they no longer trigger panic in high-pressure moments. Many people notice a significant improvement in confidence and focus as a result.
